PA CareerLink® Bucks County Assistance to Youth

The Workforce & Economic Development Department offers two programs to youth in Bucks County through the PA CareerLink®.  Both programs are grant funded to provide career exploration, workplace readiness skills, post-graduation opportunities, industry recognized certifications and credentials.

Youth Workforce Centers (Ages 16-24)

The Youth Workforce Centers (YWCs) offer free High School Equivalency (GED® or HiSET®) instruction and Employment Services for Bucks County Youth ages 16-24. Youth who already have a high school diploma or equivalency may qualify for Employment Services.

The YWCs are located at the two locations of the PA CareerLink® Bucks County in Bristol and Perkasie. Currently, the YWCs are offering all services virtually. Programming is open enrollment, so youth may join at any time.  Services are offered year-round, Monday to Friday.

Fees related to studying for and attaining a high school equivalency (GED® or HiSET®) are covered for all enrolled participants, including texts, online resources, study materials, and testing fees.

In School Youth (ISY) Program (High School Juniors and Seniors)

Whether that path is the military, furthering their education, or jumping directly into the workforce, the ISY program will equip the participants with the necessary skills to aid them in achieving success.

From the beginning, students are made aware of skill sets that they already possess. They also learn about their personality traits and how they associate with various career paths through such vehicles as The Holland Code and Onetonline.com.

From that they learn to follow a real-life situation by:

  • Selecting a particular occupation that matches their personality traits and interests
  • Researching average salary, work conditions, necessary education/certificates, etc.
  • Explore various employment search engines
  • Write a cover letter and resume for said job
  • Participate in an on-line virtual mock-interview
  • Write a Thank You letter following the interview

From that point, the student explores, in detail, the pros and cons of social media. Then they create a LinkedIn account and begin their experience in networking.

Throughout the semester, students are introduced to various career and motivational speakers. Recruiters from the armed services, polices officers, science, and medical experts, financial aid, college counselors, and more are brought in the virtual classroom to inform students of careers in these areas. Students are also taken on virtual tours of local manufacturers to educate them in a world of manufacturing that may well be different than their grandfather’s or even father’s.

During the course students are eligible to earn the following certificates among several others

  • First Aid/CPR, AED and Narcan® training
  • OSHA 10
  • Forklift
  • ServSafe®
  • N.I.M.S. (National Incident Management System)
