"Justice"

Justice tile

Justice is the ninth in a series of special tiles made exclusively for members of the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works. This reissued design will only be available to members beginning in May 2010 and will be retired from production in May 2011. For this design of circa 1900, Henry Mercer made a casting from a 17th-century stove tile provided by Joseph G. Willman, a local artist living in nearby Edison. Willman found the original tile at Singen, a German city just north of the Swiss border. Depicted is a personification of Justice beneath an elaborate, Renaissance-style canopy made up of floral swags and grotesque masks and supported by caryatids. She is portrayed with her traditional attributes – sword of justice, a balance scales and a blindfold over her eyes. Beneath is “Die Grechtigkeit,” the German for “Justice.”
