Sheriffs Clerk












Performs simple and routine clerical tasks of limited difficulty and responsibility that are a necessary part of the work.  Clerical duties are intermediate level.  Work may include the receiving and handling of money and the operation of standard office equipment for which no previous training is required.  Work generally follows standard procedures or when new tasks are to be assigned, detailed instructions are given.  Little discretionary action is required.


  • Enters data verbatim from clear copy and rough drafts.
  • Files, sorts (by alphabet, number code or predetermined category), stamps correspondence and documents according to established procedures.
  • Answers telephone, receives and routes visitors and telephone calls and gives out routine information.
  • Copies and posts simple arithmetic computations/tabulations as in making out invoices.
  • Checks invoices and orders for service for completeness and accuracy.
  • Counter work with the public.
  • Answers telephone, receives visitors, routes visitors and handles routine telephone calls.
  • Operates office equipment such as computer, typewriter, copier and adding machine.
  • Enters, verifies and processes data into computer.
  • May be required to perform additional work that follows prescribed or well-established procedures that can be learned within a reasonable time with on-the-job training.More detailed instructions will be given to employees at the beginning of work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Other duties may be assigned

  • High school diploma or equivalent with course work including/ supplemented by courses in business
  • ·or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite, with a keyboard skill of 45 wpm.
  • Some knowledge of business English and spelling, with basic business math.
  • Must be able to work effectively and properly with the public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feels objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
