Restitution

Restitution is the court's attempt to respond to a victim's loss by ordering the offender to pay for actual financial losses incurred by the victim. Restitution could be the cost of medical care, the value a stolen item that was not recovered, the cost of a vehicle repair after an accident, the cost of therapy due to trauma from the offense, etc. In order for restitution to be included in a sentence, the victim must provide the District Attorney with the necessary information regarding the loss, and the judge must order it at the time of sentencing.

The Adult Probation Department collects the restitution ordered in misdemeanor and felony convictions. If the restitution was ordered as a part of an ARD agreement (Advanced Rehabilitative Disposition), the District Attorney's office handles the restitution. If you are a victim and have questions about restitution, call our office. Telephone 215-348-6634 and ask for the Restitution Secretary.
